The job of dental assistant requires vocational training as per the German Vocational Training Act. This course of training follows the “dual system”, i.e. takes place at college and in the clinic, and usually lasts three years.

Potential trainees must have a good certificate of secondary education; trainees with a university matriculation certificate (e.g. high school diploma) may apply to have the training period reduced to two years. This safe, skilled healthcare profession is naturally also an interesting alternative for young men, more and more of whom are becoming interested in this job.

During their first year, trainees receive a general grounding covering the entire profession. They then take an examination at the end of the second year. This is an essential requirement for admission to the final examination, which is conducted by the Landeszahnärztekammer (Dental Council) of Baden-Württemberg. This final examination comprises written, oral and practical components.

During their training, would-be dental assistants learn about healthcare, clinical practice, occupational safety, environmental protection and the use and care of dental equipment and instruments, and also acquire a basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology that can be used later in their practical work.

Last but not least, the scope of knowledge and competence to be acquired helps develop the trainee’s character and sense of responsibility, allowing them to use them purposefully when exercising their practical skills.
