This term is used when the gums recede from the teeth as a result of being placed under excessive strain. This has nothing to do with gum inflammation or periodontitis.

This strain comes from years of overenthusiastic scrubbing with the toothbrush, extreme lateral forces exerted when grinding the teeth, excessive tooth movement (pressure or pulling) as a result of orthodontic measures or, as in most cases, by a combination of these factors. This is why it is very important to analysis the patient’s bite and grinding movements before treatment.

Exposed tooth roots can be covered with gum tissue depending on the severity of the condition. This requires a gum tissue transplant. For this, nearby gum tissue is “pushed” microsurgically into position so that it covers the exposed root, or transplanted from another part of the mouth.

Whether or not the root can be covered is determined according to the degree of gingival recession.

Transplanted gum tissue can be made to heal more quickly by using substances such as Emdogain® or concentrates of the patient’s own blood platelets (PRP or PRGF).

We specialise in these treatments.
